What to expect in your first therapy session

A calm walkthrough of a typical first session—goals, paperwork boundaries, and how to get the most from the conversation.

The first session is often a mix of conversation and structure. Your therapist will usually ask what brought you in, what you hope might change, and what has helped or hurt in the past. You might review privacy practices, fees, and how to reach your therapist between sessions.

You do not need to share your entire life story in session one. Many people feel nervous, tearful, or even numb—that is common. A good therapist will help you pace the conversation and check in about what feels manageable.

Bring questions. Ask about approach, how progress is reviewed, and what to do if you need a different pace. Therapy works best when it feels collaborative, not mysterious.

If you are considering care in Minot or via telehealth, you can start with a free 15-minute consultation to see whether the fit feels right before scheduling a full session.
